I don't think it says the only way, but Microsoft refers single
computer owners to use Automatic Update because it will be a much
    smaller download.
The actual size of AU download of SP-2 depends on how current the
    computer is on other updates.

Sorry, I meant that on the www.windowsupdate.com page, it states
that currently WU is the only way to receive SP2. It would have
saved my time if there had been a redirect link to the page you
provided, even though it is not intended for the casual user. MS
should think about perhaps releasing a separate executable client
to gauge which parts of the pack are needed by any given user, in
case someone experiences the problem discussed in this thread and
cannot update with WU. I suppose it doesn't matter. It'll
probably be fixed/fix itself by this afternoon anyhow. : )

  6. Arthur;
Hopefully it will be resolved soon.
I sent an enquiry to someone who should be able to check it out.

Same thing here. Tried rebooting, restarting, and closing out of IE
for a while. Still no sign that the download has begun, some 7 hours
after authorizing it. Should we just be patient, or is there reason
to think something's wrong with the process?

  10. Phil;
I was just informed this seems only to be an issue when you select
"Notify me..." in Automatic Update and they are working on it.
Select the other Automatic Update option and see.
    Right click My Computer
    Click Properties
    Click Automatic Update tab
    Select "Automatic Recommended"
    Click OK and follow prompts

  12. Automatic Updates may not immediately begin to download after you've
approved an update for download. Since SP2 is so large, it is trickled down
to computers gradually in a controlled manner that does not overly stress
the network infrastructure. The download will eventually start up by itself
and complete and then prompt you to install it.

    Thanks.

If you have the new Automatic Update Service truly enabled, the update is
happening in the background. Check in the Control Panel under Automatic
Updates to see what you have enabled.

I've since seen wu something .exe running in Task Manager a couple of
times, so I guess there is something happening now and then in the
background. I'll just give it some more time and see what happens.

Many thanks to everyone who has responded to my post.

  18. Phil, I've just installed SP2 tonite, so far so good. I obtained the full
download SP2 (got it from a friend on cable) and installed it from that, didn't
    do it through WU.

    Well done, Kaylene,

I'm not going to panic just yet. I think I can live without SP2 for a
    little while :)

I'm reluctant to enable automatic installation, although I did switch
my preference from "notify me before updating & installing" to "notify
me only before installing." It's been more than 24 hours now since I
got the invitation to download SP2 and clicked to begin the process.
No activity reflected on my DSL modem, nothing on my Windows Update
log, and no indicator icon (as others have apparently received) to
show what percentage of the file has downloaded.

Could you say more -- or point me to a relevant URL -- about the
information you've received indicating that MS has acknowledged this
is an issue (for users who want to control their own installation) and
    is working on it?
