  1. There is no URL, it is direct communication with 2 Microsoft

I've since seen wu something .exe running in Task Manager a couple of
You're a step ahead of me, then. Since authorizing the download a day
and a half ago, I've seen absolutely no evidence of any activity.

I get exactly the same. I'm currently 'tailing' the output of
    WindowsUpdate.log and I keep getting:

No pending client directive, bailing out
Out of proc datastore is shutting down
Out of proc datastore is now inactive

Is there anyway I can find out what WU is doing other than looking at
the logs? If it is going to trickle the stuff down later I would like
to know about this from the task bar. At the moment I have asked for
it and feel rather ill-informed as to what on earth is now going on.

I was planning on leaving it on overnight, but I'm going to turn off
now its 1am - as I don't know what my computer is planning to do!!!

    Thanks Jupiter

Presumably if I download the full update file myself from the web site,
then automatic update will spot that I already have it and will not
    download it again - perhaps?

the sp2 download is about a 10 hour download, and will download and install
"behind the scenes", while you are working on your computer. you will be
notified when the download is complete.
even if you shut your computer off before the install is complete, it will
pick up where it left off when you connect to the internet the next day, or
    the next time.
you would be better served to go to the windowsupate page and write for an
sp2 cd rom install disk. windows was mailing them away for free.
by now, you probably have sp2 installed succesfully. but if you dont, if you
kept shutting it off, go ahead and download it and let it do its thing. be
patient and after several hours it will download and install.
the disk of course is much quicker. i did both. i started the install, i
couldnt see anything happening, (same as you), so i wrote to windows and they
mailed the sp2 cd rom. by the time it got here, about 4 days later, the
install was complete. (i have a 56k phone modem connection). i used the cd
anyway, and installed the whole thing over again using the disk.
    later
