If you have "Maintain my ratings as global ratings in files" (as I do)
then why doesn't WMP11 allow me to set star ratings on files simply
because they're not (yet) in my library?

As you're probably aware, the Windows Media Player product team removed the
ability to use Windows Media Player's Advanced Tag Editor to edit tags for
tracks that are not in your library. I suppose that your point is another
example of the same general behavioral changes.

While it may seem like a little issue, this one thing may be the biggest
reason that users must have - not choose to have - multiple media players
installed on their PCs. This is not something that many users can choose to
accept or not accept like silly limitations on album art size. This
represents missing and often required functionality that can only be achieved
    by obtaining a competitive product.

I was aware of this, from past experience, but something seems to have
fixed this (for me, at least).
I rip CD's to a directory outside of WMP11's purview, and am currently
playing my most recently ripped CD, from files that are not yet in my
    library.

I'm also happily using the Advanced Tag Editor to fix some truncated
    title names...

Don't ask me how I achieved this - I didn't try to, it just happened.
I'll sell you a clone of my C: drive if you're desperate!

Perhaps it's an aspect of being in the "Now Playing" list? If so, then
    that's a workaround.

Darn! I'm going mad - this ability had just disappeared. At the same
time my "Now Playing" display stopped showing the "File Path" column -
that was how I was so sure that they were coming from outside my library!

Darn! I'm going mad - this ability had just disappeared. At the same
Arggh! It's come back. Just to demonstrate that I'm not going mad (well,
no madder than usual) you can go to http://swiftys.org.uk/mirage.png to
see my "Now Playing" in WMP11 offering "Advanced Tag Editor" on a bunch
of files in D:\Steves\Ripped\... which is most definitely NOT part of my
media library (that's all under D:\Steves\Audio\...)

Strangely enough, the group in question (Camel) also have an album
"Mirage". No wonder I chose that name for the image.
