Is there a setting in IE that will prevent add-ons from automatically
being installed? I got some virus add-on that autmatically installed
itself. (I have to disable it and run AV scan and Spyware scan).

You control add-ons, by agreeing to install software that includes an
add-on. Once an add-on is installed, you usually can control whether and
how it is automatically updated. Add-ons aren't added without your
knowledge - unless they come from malicious sources (viruses, spyware,
etc.) which is why we have security software.

You can prevent Internet Explorer from installing add-ons, but then you
won't be able to update desirable applications like Java and Flash,
among others. And that setting is no guarantee that malicious software
won't get onto your computer anyway.
