    Hi All,

I am having problems with viewing clips on Youtube it keeps on stopping and
starting with clips that are over 6 minutes in duration. Its not only clips
on Youtube that i get this problem with but others also. I am using windows
media when opening the clips, although if i use Real player i dont get the
    problem.

Can someone let me know if there is a setting in WM that allows me to play
these clips without stoping and starting problems

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards.

  2. No there isn't, as YouTube use flash player for video, not WM

Your issue sounds typical of a poor or insufficient internet
connection - the pausing results from buffering (where the player runs
    out of data).

This will happen especially if you choose the high quality (H264)
streams which need to deliver a lot more data reliably to keep up in
    realtime.

Check your current broadband speed on a quiet day
    http://www.speedtest.net/

You'd need at least 250kbps for regular youtube video (say,
300-400kbps) and at least 900kbps for high quality (say 1.5mbps for
    reliable use)

If the URL to the video ends in fmt=22 then you'd need around 2.5Mbps
(approx. 3Mbps reliably) to view the 1280x720 size video (e.g. this
    link )

Now, re-run the tests while downloading your favourite bittorrent, and
your kids are online gaming and file sharing on MSN, and see what
results you get with contention for the connection.

    Hi Neil,

Just another question, when I look at clips on Youtube am i accessing the
software on Youtube or am i using my own local software on my machine? how do
i know what i am using?

  5. It's a flash player control which runs inside your web browser
(whatever you use). Flash is a product by Adobe which is on about
95-99% of all internet connected machines, and is normal and expected
to be there by many websites.

So the flash program itself is on your PC, and the code which together
makes up a player is hosted on the website you're visiting. However
you slice it, the software all runs on your machine, with Youtube just
providing a stream of data (video) to the player running there, as
requested by your clicks on their website.
