Stuck on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." sc

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Tempest, Mar 7, 2006.

  1. Tried an MTU set at 1454 (decimal) and it still was headed for overheating -
after 4 minutes of scanning CPU was at 94 deg C.

I don't know what else to try.

  4. - Download "Dr TCP" from <http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe>
    - Double-click DRTCP021.exe
    - In the drop-down box at the bottom labelled "Adapter Settings", select the
name of the Windows network connection that you are using to connect to your
    router.
    - in the box "MTU" type 1460
    - click Save
    - restart Windows.

  6. I tried this and rebooted.
    Went to MS update.
Had to abort after about 2-3 minutes of scanning since CPU got to 95C.
    Any ideas?

  7. svchost.exe ramps up to 80%. CPU usage stays at 100% until it overheats.

Here is the contents of WindowsUpdate.log - I pasted the portion that I
believe pertains to the most recent attempt to update:

  8. Windows Update via the web seems to work fine from a different computer (a
Dell laptop) connected to the same router. And I didn't make any changes to
the Dell when I switched from Cable to DSL connection.

    Weird.

  9. Please revert to Windows update as follows:

    - go to Microsoft Update, but do not click on either Express or Custom
    buttons.
    - click "Change Settings" in left hand panel
    - if necessary, scroll down in right-hand panel
    - check "Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update
    only"
    - click "Apply changes now"
    - close Internet Explorer
    - now use IE to go to "Windows Update"
    - click "Custom"

Does this now complete a scan more quickly?

If so, use this now to update Windows to latest patches.

Visit <http://office.microsoft.com/> to update your Office installation.

  10. Yes!
The scan completed in only about 10 seconds.
    One problem - There are some udpates I don't want to install (IE7) - I don't
see an option to leave an update for later on these items. Is there a way to
    do that?

    Thanks for your help!

    Nevermind.

Thanks! I HAD the following symptoms:
    1) Hangup (99% CPU on svchost.exe) when right click and choose to install
windows update with the windows update system tray icon
    2) Hangup (99% CPU on svchost.exe) when attempt to run windows update on
    windowsupdate.com
    3) Hangup (99% CPU on svchost.exe) when try to validate genuine advantage
for manually downloading update from windows update. And yes, I have a
genuine copy and it did validate the copy but thenkicked off the svchost.exe
    to 99% CPU.

I followed these steps up to Suggestion 4 and it resolved the issue. I do
not know or care which step fixed it but I suspect it was suggestion 2 & 3
since I had already reregistered the DLLs and did not have any internet
history (this was a new install).

For those still facing the problem can use the following site

    http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/

Now till yesterday I was having same prom. I tried everytrhing posted here,
    but nothing worked.

I used the WindizUpdate service. Its amazing. It let me install all the
    updates via Opera itself.

And guess what after installing updates via WindizUpdate , my regular
windows update has started working as well.

This is the best solution I have found so far

I agree that MS can make its OS work perfectly and eliminate errors by
spending more time debugging. But, if you think that this is bad, install
Linux. The compatibility problems you will encounter there will make you go
insane. Making an OS is hard and compatibility issues always seem to happen.
But given all the different programs that run on our computers from all the
different companies, I am amazed that more do not occur.

    My fix:
    Go to update.microsoft.com
Click in the left pane "Change Settings"
Scroll down on page in right pane and and put a checkmark in "Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only " and hit button
    "Apply changes now".
