I am experiencing this problem also-and after running defrag and Adaware,
followed these suggested steps. All the steps took, but after rebooting I am
still experiencing the perpetual "Checking for the lastest updates..."
message and nothing pulls down. I'm running XP Home Edition and recently
installed McAfee from Comcast. I've tried turing on Popups, as well as
shutting down McAfee. Anybody have any other suggestions?

Mine wasn't working either after I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. After trying about everything listed, the one last thing I did that made it work was to update my Windows Explorer web browser. When installing Windows XP, it came with Internet Explorer 6. I updated to IE 9 and then the Windows Update started working.
