SUS-Clients

  1. Hello NG,
I hope I am right here. I have following problem: For testing, I installed a
SUS-Server (Actual version from MS) on a standalone W2003 with all Fixes.
The SUS-server works fine so far, it receives the patches from MS. The only
;-(( problem is, I cannot get the clients contacting the SUS-server. From MS
I downloaded a MSI-File which tells me: It will only run on a W2k maschine
with SP2 or above or on XP. What does it think I started it on? On XP with
    SP2 ;-((

I checked the Web and found a lot "solutions". Most of them say they work on
ADS. But we do not have ADS! I cannot get my Boss to ADS so far.

Does anyone know a Way to get XP Workstations to contact a local SUS-Server?
Please in a way that even I can understand? ;-))

    THX in advance
    Jacob

  2. The updated client is not needed on XP Sp1 or Sp2 as it was
    included starting with Sp1.
Like the message say, what you downloaded is for XP (gold,
    without any service packs)

    Hi Jacob,

SUS client is provided in Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP SP1 or newer
operating system. If you have Windows 2000 SP3 you can use SUS to deploy
critical patches, and e.g. SP4 just like you can use SUS to deploy Windows
    XP SP2.

If you don't have Windows 2000 SP3 and Windows XP SP1, you can first
download and deploy Automatic Updates client. You can download it from here:
    Automatic Updates June 2002
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/susclient/default.asp

How did you configure your clients?

Since you don't have Active Directory you will have to edit or import
registry settings to your clients. To make things a little easier, you can
e.g. configure one station and export the registry settings. Now all you
have to do is import these settings to your other computers...

Here is a very good white paper on how to deploy SUS server:

Software Update Services Deployment White Paper
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/susdeployment.mspx

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/default.mspx

Here is a Newsgroup dedicated to software update:
