Syn Center, Vista Home Premium, Dell 410

    I apologize for a cross-post (e.g. Vista.general), but when I saw
"activesyn" I didn't expect anything about WMDC. Once I opened the forum, I
saw that there was even a message that this is where one should post about
    WMDC.

In any event, I am very much in need of getting the Syn Center to work and
despite a considerable investment of time and energy, all have come to
    naught.

Before my new Dell XPS 410 arrived earlier this week, I searched the web for
how to continue to syn my 410 at home and my XPS 6xx at the office. I found
    out what to do.

The start was rough. It would not work. Then I had to do a hard stop of the
pc, waited a minute, restarted and suddenly I could syn with my phone
(Cingular 3125). And I had no trouble the next morning at the office.

Well ... my dancing in the streets was premature. The initial syn was the
ONLY time that it has worked.

After that success, I turned my attention to loading all the software on the
new pc. I have most everything going but still some problems with the Vista
version of Paperport Pro 11 that has been turned over to the vendor's
research team for a solution. In the meantime, the pre-Vista version of
    Paperport Pro 11 is working.

Thinking some of these programs corrupted the syn center files, I
uninstalled the syn Vista 32 bit software, did a cold reboot and reinstalled
the software according to online instructions (like with device connected).
I have disabled my firewall and anti-virus programs (NIS 2007).

On occasion the Vista window will show the device (Cingular 3125, a
'smartphone') is connected and reports that the syn has failed. But soon the
little green flashing bar changes to red and reports the syn failed.
Underneath is a note about "1 error". I click on the hyperlink and it goes
nowhere. I have go through all aspects of the Syn Center software and no
found any place to change a connection setting so I don't know if that would
    make a difference.

When I called Ms this morning about my problem, then said I could pay $59 to
get help. I said that was unfair since their driver was deficient and they
have had a long history of problems with this new syn software. Then they
said call Dell. And I said I did call Dell about another question and
brought this up. Even though they are not supposed to work on this kind of
software the tech took about 30 minutes trying to help me solve it. Then Ms
said to try self help and I replied I have gone all through the MS web, the
laughable troubleshooting 'guide' for the Syn Center, and posted messages in
now four or more different forums.

So what's the verdict? Do I have to wait for the next version of this
software or is there a known solution? I have Outlook 2007 on both my Vista
pc (where I use the phone's cable) and Xp Pro pc with no problems with the
    Xp syn (which uses bluetooth).

    Thanks in advance.

Perhaps I should add that the results are the same if I start with WMDC or
go straight to the Syn Center. I just tried again by startign with WMDC
after configuring my firewall to allow the three primary files in its
folder, and again I got connected and the syn started but failed. More
errors but no details that gives me a clue about what to do.

Thanks, but if you notice in the initial post I mention disabling the
firewall. I am since also added specific rules to allow the WMDC files to
use any port but nothing has made a difference so far.
The only thing I haven't tried is to use msconfig and disabled everything
under startup and services. I am uneasy about doing that and not sure it
    would make a difference.

Thanks Chris for your helpful response. Unfortunately, your tech-speak is
beyond my vocabulary and limited expertise.

I think WMDC was install before Office 2007, but if not the uninstall and
reinstall was certainly after Office 2007.

I don't know what MAPI applications are. Please enlighten me. I hope this is
not foolish to say, but after my successful syn I probably configured
Outlook Express and it has two pop3 accounts, one news account (Ms) and one
IMAP account (CompuServe). Should I disable or remove CompuServe from
Outlook Express? I can always use their webmail and it works fine on my Xp
    Pro at the office.

BTW, the last thing I tried after making sure that all the WMDC files were
allowed all ports by my firewall (NIS 2007 and I had earlier tried with the
entire firewall disabled) was to use msconfig and disable everything in
startup and services. That made no difference. WMDC still connects, but will
not syn and then the odd message "Activesync encountered a problem with the
desktop." I never installed any version of Activesyn, the computer came with
Vista from the factory on Monday and one of the first downloads was WMDC
since I need to syn email, contacts, and calendar between my two desktops
    and smartphone.

I tried to create the logs that are on your blog (PocketGear.com) but it
doesn't work for me. In fact, when I added the two files to the Windows
Mobile folder and turned off the pc, when I turned it back on it started to
boot normally but then I had a black screen until I used crtl-alt-del a
    couple of times.

Anyway I think tried to sync and after it failed (as usual) a search of my
    hd turned nothing like wmdc.log.

I did notice, however, that there was an error message in my phone. It gave
me the code 0x85010014. I found this on Ms KB and didn't find anything there
    that would help me.

Still frustrated and hoping that maybe a new driver will come out and solve
the problem many of us are reporting.
