My understanding from what I've read on the web, is that you cannot synch a
PocketPC with a stand-alone Outlook client via Activesync - you can only
synch it in the situation where there is a backend Exchange server. Please
    correct me if I'm wrong.

Given that I use Outlook, are there any other applications out there can
will synch? I don't want to set up the Inbox feature to poll an
internet-based ISP account for a number of logistical reasons.

No you do not need an Exchange server in order to sync with Outlook. Since
you already have Outlook installed, go ahead and install Activesync from the
CD. Or you can dowload it from microsoft web site.

Note: If you are not using Windows Mobile 5 device, then install Activesync
version 3.8 otherwise install version 4.1.

Then follow the wizard instructions and you should be able to setup a
partnership successfully. If you do not wish to sync Inbox, then simply
uncheck it when prompted to select the information types that you wish to

    done- you are wrong.
locally, attached to the computer that has outlook, you can sync with
    outlook- no exchange required

remotely, devices 2003se and early, can usually be set to synch over wifi,
internet, and a variety of other 'remote' methods-- with a pc

remotely wm5 devices can only sync with an exchange server.
