Syncing to Storage Card on WM5 Device (Axim)

Discussion in 'Windows Media Player' started by Chris Courtright, Mar 1, 2007.

  1. I am unable to determine how to get my Windows Media Player 11 on my Vista
desktop to recognize and sync to my storage card that is in my Dell Axim. It
sees the builtin Axim memory but does not show the storage card that is

    Any advice?

  2. I can't think of a way to get this to work properly, no. The best
option (and probably a lot quicker) is to use a SD / CF card reader
attached to your PC using USB. Media player should sync to it as a
"removable device" quite happily and about 5x faster than transferring
    files via the PPC.

Problem with a USB card reader is that you can't copy protected WMA files.
I have URGE subscription service and am having the same problem with my
Samsung i730 PPC Phone. I was on the phone with MSFT Tech today for a bit.
They are supposed to get back to me Monday or so, with a solution (I hope).

FWIW, I finally decided to use my laptop which has XP, Active Sync 4.5 and
WMP11. I am using that computer to put all my protected media on my i730.

  4. Ah, yes. I don't purchase those for compatibilty reasons you've noted.
The OP didn't mention DRM'd tracks, so I hoped he was using MP3 or WMA
    audio rips from CDs.

  5. This is accurate. I am using MP3/WMA rips from CDs that I own.

  6. I have heard that Microsoft is supposed to release a patch for this via a KB
article. Apparently in their zeal for stomping buffer overflow risks, they
truncated the field that contains path to storage devices on Windows Mobile
devices. The field truncates after the device identification information and
so storage cards to not show up. The patch is supposed to fix that issue and
report back to Windows Media Player 11 all the capabilities of the mobile
device. Once that is there, you will be able to select the storage card as a
    sync location.

Apparently this was a hot topic that surfaced out of discussions around the
T-Mobile Dash device. You can do some searches round WMP 11, Dash, and other
terms around storage card or syncing (depending on your search engine
preferences) to get some background on the issue.

The patch is supposed to be available very soon (this week or next).

  7. Hi Neil,

I am having this same problem with my Axim X51V and so was going to sync to
the CF card directly with my card reader. I would still like to convert the
dvr-ms files during the sync process. When I go to the advanced option's
quality tab for the Flash Device properties in WMP11, the Video and TV Shows
conversion settings are greyed out while the Music conversion settings are
enabled. Is there another way to enable conversion for video when syncing to
    a flash device?

Why would these settings be disabled? I need much video smaller files for
my PDA than I do on my desktop.

    Thanks for your help,
