Tab order when switching tabs using Ctrl+Tab

Discussion in 'Internet Explorer' started by Jonathan S. Schneider, Feb 1, 2006.

  1. It would be great if switching between multiple tabs using the Ctrl+Tab
keyboard shortcut (when 3 or more tabs are open) would work the same way with
respect to tab order as Alt+Tab works when switching between applications.

When using Alt+Tab to switch between applications, the application activated
is the most-recently-used application; so, for example, if I have
applications A, B, C, and D open with application A being currently active
    and I Alt+Tab once and application B becomes active, then when I Alt+Tab a
second time, the application that becomes active is A (not C).

In the same way, it would be nice if I have tabs open named A, B, C, D, then
if I Ctrl+Tab repeatedly (releasing both keys after each switch), it would
take me between tabs A and B. Under the current behavior (with yesterday's
IE 7 "Preview Beta 2" release, v7.0.5296.0), if I switch from A to B and then
want to go back to A, I have to tab through all other open tabs before I get
all the way back around to A.

  2. I second this. Ctrl+Tab running through the list left to right is really
useless and often takes longer than moving my hand to the mouse and clicking
    the tab I want.

I would have switched to firefox long ago when it came out if its tabbing
used the alt+tab switching convention. It didn't, and it was painful. I'm
disappointed to see that the IE7 beta2 switches between tabs the same way
firefox does. Hopefully this will be changed.

It would also be nice if perhaps the quick tab feature was made a little
more lightweight and integrated with the ctrl+tab shortcut in a similar way
to windows alt+tab UI. That is, pop up a window of the open tabs when the
user hits ctrl+tab and holds ctrl.
