I’m currently in the process of testing a Disaster Recovery Plan. The plan
consists of total loss of hardware, and restoring recent backups to different
hardware. I have a server setup with similar volume info and the same
version and release of server 2003 std. sp1. I receive the following error
message while running NT Backup(Restore Wizard), The backup file contains
unrecognized data and cannot be used. I’m trying to restore a backup from
the Hypothetically (lost server) to the new (New Hardware) Server. I’ve run
the backup on the current server and tried to restore to the new server, but
keep getting the same error message. Can anyone point me in the right
direction? Also, any reference to articles on restoring Windows Server 2003
to different hardware would be appreciated. Also, the current server is a
    DC, and DHCP server.

    Hi
Can you copy the backup file to a local disk and restore it from there?

Last time I saw that error it was solved by coping the BK to a local drive,
sounds that this time isn't the case.
Note: that in this type of restore the server must be in workgroup and not
connected to any domain or member of any domain, ok?

I would suggest do perform another full backup of the original domain
controller, including the system state and the drive that contains the
    system volume.
    then follow the:

I'm still running into the same error message. It seems that the only time I
don't get the message is when I restore the SSD only. Any other
    suggestions???

Sometimes a small mistake can be the reasons of a huge loss. So, it i
    suggeste
you to get back Windows backup files with professional and advanced tool unde
    Windows XP

You can easily recover Windows XP backup files after removing error message

Some time following error message flashed on the system screen
“backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used&rdquo

This time you have to use some efficient third party application like this
    http://www.bkfrepairtool.com/the-backup-files-contains-unrecognized-data-can-not-be-used.htm

    Or, try this tool
