The Messenger service terminated with service-specific error 2136

    Whenever I try to start the Messenger Service on SBS 2003 SP1 I get an error.
    The System log shows the following.
    "The Messenger service terminated with service-specific error 2136 (0x858)."

    Any ideas?

    According to your description, I understand that you received the error
    message "The Messenger service terminated with service-specific error 2136
    (0x858).", when you try to start the Messenger Service on the SBS Server
    2003 SP1. If I have misunderstood your concern, please don't hesitate to

    Based on my research, the description of the error 2136 (0x858) is:

    NERR_NetworkError
    A general failure occurred in the network hardware.

    To narrow down this issue, please answer and perform the following
    questions and steps:

    1. Please run services.msc in the command prompt on the SBS 2003 Server,
    double-click the Messenger service, check the Startup type: Automatic, Log
    on as: Local System account, clear-select Allow service to interact with
    desktop option. Please also check the status of the service depends on the
    following system components:

    NetBIOS Interface
    Plug and Play
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    Workstation

    2. To check the configuration of the NetBIOS Interface, please perform the
    below steps:

    a. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.

    b. Right-click the Server Local Area Connection's icon, and then click
    Properties.

    c. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.

    d. Click Advanced.

    e. Click the WINS tab.

    f. Click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP".

    g. Click OK to exit.

    3. This issue may break third-party software doing a "net send" to DNS
    names or IP addresses, please temporarily uninstall the third-party
    software in the SBS Server, and then check if the issue can be re-produced.

    4. Please update the lasted driver for the NICs in the SBS Server, and do
    the lasted update for the SBS Server, then check if the issue can be
    re-produced.

    5. Please check the msgsvc.dll and wkssvc.dll file's version, in my
    testing machine, its version is 5.2.3790.90.

    6. If the issue persists, please kindly do a screen capture of this issue,
    and attach it in your reply.

    Yesterday I could not get this service to start. I had even rebooted the
    server. This morning I had to reboot for other reasons and now the service is
    running.
