tool to quickly enumerate directory permissions?

Discussion in 'Windows Server' started by Jonny teh Cheese, Jun 12, 2006.

  1. I need to document diectory permissions on a series of servers. As is usally
the case, there's no historical knowledge, and each is different.

I do know that ACEs are set at the directory level, and not on individual
files (of which there are thousands). The output of CACLS is way to verbose
to accomplish this quickly, and selecting "Properties/Security" on each
    directory is too slow.

Is there any kind of utility or tool that will quickly generate a list of
    currently-set permissions?

    Several tools exist.

One tool that I use is showacls.exe which is a Windows Server resource kit
    utility.

Another tool I use is part of the NTSEC utility suite from Pedestal software
    called listacl.exe.

A third method that could be used is via VBscript if you are good with that
    technology.
