I can't find it in the add remover programs but I seem to have both verion
4.7 and 6.1 on my system. Under program files I have a MSM Messenger
subdirectory with 6.1. There is also a Messenger directory which based on
properties is version 4.7. My Add/remove programs just shows 6.1. I've
thought about just deleting the messenger directory (or at least renaming it
to see if it affects anything). What do you think?

  2. Greetings mcl,

Actually you have MSN Messenger 6.1 and Windows Messenger 4.7, they are *not* the same
    product.

If you delete or rename the \Program Files\Messenger folder (which is where Windows Messenger
is stored), Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will no longer function as
well as applications which utilize Windows Messenger (like Outlook Express) may appear to
"freeze" as they attempt to start Windows Messenger (but can't because you've removed/renamed
    it).

Instead, assuming Windows Messenger isn't in your way, you can remove its shortcuts (and do a
bit of disabling) by going into the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, choose
Add/Remove Windows Components, and uncheck Windows Messenger.
