I am attempting to capture video into Movie Maker Version 5.1 from my Canon
ZR85 A Mini DV Camcorder over a firewire. My device manager shows that my
Emachines laptop running windows XP home edition properly recognizes my
    camcorder.

With the camcorder attached in payback mode, I launch Movie Maker and select
the option to capture video. At that point, Movie Maker locks up and does not
    respond.

What steps can I take to solve this problem?

You're using XPSP2, right? That has pretty massive improvements in Movie
    Maker.

Does it work if you start Movie Maker first and THEN plug in or turn on the
    camcorder... ?
