Unable to detect tape drive or tape media

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Mikael Schvili, Aug 31, 2005.

  1. Hi,

My clients SBS backup has failed everyday for about two weeks. Until then it
worked fine. The logs are not identical but they all indicate
tape/media/drive detection issues. Both new and old tapes are affected.

The client has never run cleaning tapes (although told to do so).

I suspect the drive is eighter damaged or dirty or both, but would like to
get get a second opinion on that since I don't want to recommend the client
to invest in a new drive that doesn't solve the problem. Would it be worth
the effort to bye a cleaning tape and try to clean it first? Or could this be
    SBS related?

    Configuration and log files below.

    Greatful for any advise.

    Hi Mikael
We had the same problem on two sites using Veritas and the problem was due
to APC Powerchute software needed to be upgraded to V7.xx because of a Java
    run time licence problem.
Sounds crazy but check it out

  3. Hi Theo,
Thank you for your reply but there's no APC software on this system. So
    that's not it.

If they've never cleaned it, it's probably dirty.
Yes, absolutely. That is the most logical first thing to try. They need to
run this once a month. If they don't, well, they'll have problems, won't
they....you can specify that the Tape Changer person be sent a calendar
invite to a) change tapes daily and b) run the cleaning tape monthly. I
don't know that you can add ".....under penalty of partial or total
decapitation as permitted by local law" but it would be a nice touch. ;-)
Run a cleaning tape through, and then try a simple NTBackup job. If that
works, then try your SBS backup and see how it goes.<snip>

  5. Not to change the subject, but how does a partial decapitation work?

You need a very dull knife....or maybe just a spork, and the will to
    succeed.
