I'll put in my 2 cents worth. I had the same problem - updates seem to hang
when downloading. Also, I would have Automatic Download set for Automatic
and same problem. In task bar would show something like 33% downloaded and
go no further. Now you don't mention anything about a proxy or not but this
was the issue with me. From the command line I typed the following proxycfg
-u and low and behold no more issues. Info can be found here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900935/

    Hope this helps

Well it looks like I'm not the only one having this problem! I have scoured
all the threads EVERYWHERE and tried several "fixes" to no avail! I still can
not access Windows Updates! I thought it was because my hard drive buggered
up and I had to restore from a 5 month old backup, but it appears that was
not the case. Isn't it interesting that Microsoft has nothing to say about
this problem! Isn't Microsoft responsible to providing FREE updates to their
software security vunerabilities??? And now we can't get them for some ...
unknown... reason! HELP!!! I've fallen and can't get updated! Oh, BTW, my
other computer is not having a problem recieving updates and they are both
running Windows 2000 Professional. This only adds to the frustration and
    confusion!

So.... where are the MS Gods now? They control our lives but yet... take no
responsibility for the consequences. Like you, the computer that is having
the problem is not only my favorite one, but the one I count on to run my
business. The Dell Latitude laptop has been performing flawlessly for 4
years. I checked MS web site and they will not support this problem because
the OS software was "installed by the manufacturer" when I purchased the
machine. Doesn't that sound like a cop-out? It's their software but they will
not support it because they made a deal to wholesale their product to the
manufacturer and the non-qualified manufacturer is responsible for MS
software errors! Only in America! I am a frog's hair short of moving to an
alternative computer and OS system. The amount of time I lose in a year
troubleshooting MS problems is just about even with the expense of switching
4 computers over to the competition! Actually, I am seriously looking at
Mac's as replacement units. The only extra expense is changing software, but
I can justify that in about 6-10 months! If this problem doesn't get fixed in
the near future, I may be forced to switch sooner. I can not afford to lose
much more time troubleshooting MS problems! It wouldn't be so bad if they
would fess up and offer a support line, but they lay back and evesdrop on all
our conversations so they can know what is happening without being directly
involved. You know... I am seriously thinking about contacting our law firm

well, if class action comes up, count me in.
If for nothing else, my time, lost vacation, etc.

Good luck and please share a solution.

I tried your "fix" but it responded that "proxycfg" doesn't exist on my
    machine. Now what???

Well, in the mean time, does anyone feel it would be worth our while to
compare what programs we are all running for anti-virus, spyware, MS registry
error fixers and any other diagnostic type programs, etc? Maybe there is a
common thread in all this mess.

    On my malfunctioning PC:
Anti-Virus: Trend Micro Pc-cillin 2005 with spyware & Firewall enabled
Anti-Spyware: Trek Blue Spyware Nuker XT (newly updated version)
Registry Errors: Trek Blue Error Nuker
Gatway Router: Belkin F507230-4 with firewall MAC address filter enabled

Does anyone else run any of these programs?

Oddly enough, my other PC (the one that updates correctly withou errors)
does not have the 2 Trek Blue programs installed.

I am not running any of those programs.

    McAfee
    Zone Alarm
Many others, but I uninstalled any related to security, firewalls, etc.
    Nothing changed the result.

The fact thay they want us to start with fresh, clean formatted install, and
then say that if that fails, it's our hardware, is pure BS.

Another whole day shot with this crap and I have a ton of work to do.

Well, so much for that theory! Like you and so many others, I do not have
time to waste on this problem much longer. Not sure what our alternatives are
though. I guess I can disconnect from the Internet when not needed to reduce
the time of vunerability, but that will get old in a hurry. Reloading
everthing from scratch is not an option. So now what???? If anyone has any
    ideas.... I'm all ears!

I had Xp home upgrade from 98.
I also had sp2 installed, as well as all updates through Dec 13, when those
    thre broke it.

By the way, I did beging a fresh format and reinstall, followed by all
patches up to where I have to activate again and I've exceeded max
    activations.

Now I can't get updates anymore because of that.
However, I think I'm past the main problem and will spend an hour here and
there to get that new drive completely up to where I need it.

out of curiosity, does ghost use a proce called gearsec or PQV2isvc
These originally came frok Powerquest, but they were I think bought by
Nortons and could have migrated to ghost.

I was running for a long time after sp2, just fine, by the way.

    Language settings.

Somewhere, I can't recall, there is a language setting where you can change
    the language.

I had this same problem before and it had something to do with language
settings, this was about 2 years ago so i am vague on this.

Control Pannel -> Regional And Language Settings

Mine is set for English US.

I kid you not, this worked for me to get updates. Another MS wonder, as in
    wonder WTF.
