Unable to download latest version of Windows Update

I've just put a brand new HP D330 on my desk today. It came out of the box
with XP Pro SP 1. The first thing that I tried to do after establishing a
network connection was to run Windows Update to get the machine right up to
    date.

IE fires up the Windows Update site, then tells me "New windows update
software required" followed by "We've made improvements to our website. To
download the new version of the software and begin using Windows Update
    please click Update Now".

I click the "update now button" and I very briefly see a page telling me
that "Windows update is downloading and installing the updated software".
This vanishes in a fraction of a second and returns me to the original
prompt to with the "update now" button.

Is there someplace else I can manually download the current version of the
client end software? Or is there some other way to get this working?

    Thanks,

    Chris
