Just tried this, does not work.

Is there any idea why the Yellow shield does not come up or show at all?

    Hi Joe,

Another thought: Have you try to repair the corrupted files runing sfc
    /scannow

  3. When did this problem start, after some software installation, running the
    repair console or?

Have you tried the downloads with your AV and firewall off. Turn on the
    Windows firewall for a bit.

Disable anything running in your taskbar temporarily.

Have you run searches for spyware etc. Ad-aware, spybot and a full AV.

    Do a disk cleanup start>my computer>right click C:>left click properties>run
    disk cleanup

I agree with Engel try the sfc /scannow to fix corrupted files.

Getting towards the end of suggestions here.
    Try running this;

Manual instructions for Windows Update Control

Several problems on the Windows Update site can be caused by outdated or
    mismatched site

    software.

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:

    download our controls from
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab and save
them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

    1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.

    2. Click "Open".

    3. Select all the files listed.

    4. Right click on them and click "Extract."

    5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."

    6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.

    5. Click "Install."

It may be close to backing up all of your information and a clean reinstall.

    Good luck

    Have tried this too failed.

I broke down, and did a repair with the XP Home disk. Which fixed the
problem. Would have liked to have it fixed without having to do that, but
at least do data lost or lost preferences

    Thanks for all your help

  6. Glad it got fixed, you are as determined as I am to try to "fix" the problem
before the repair. At least all data was saved.

I pride myself on it :) You should be in the beta programs, that is one
of many reasons why I am so determined to fix and solve issues.
    Thanks again.
