Unable to mount Exchange Public Folder store

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by thedriver (Tee), May 14, 2009.

  1. We had a blackout and our stores corrupted. I initially restored just the
Mailbox store and the logs for speed to placate management. I replayed the
extra logs and remounted the store fine.

Now I want to either restore or remount the Public Folder store. But I can't
seem to restore it on it's own using NTBackup.

If I try and mount it the existing pub1.edb, I get the following error:
Error c1041724 is "An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting
the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store
    service, or both."

If I run eseutils it I can repair it (/p) and defrag it (/d) and a dump of
the headers (/mh) shows the store is clean, an integrity check (/g) shows
it's OK (although there is some discrepancy in the raw file about the size of
    the database being too large).

If I try and run isinteg though or mount the store it fails. isinteg comes
back with "isinteg cannot initiate the verification process" and mounting the
    store gives the error above.

I have tried copying out the pub1.edb and all the logs and replaying the
logs against the pub1.edb database - that failed with a error -515 invalid
    log sequence error.

    1. What other options do I have?
    2. Do I need to restore both database from backup at the same time and then
    replay all my log files?
    3. If I want to restore just the public folder how do I go about doing that?
Do I need a disaster recovery Exchange server?

Please help. Am somewhat desperate, have been at this for two days now.
    Thank you in advance.

  2. Thanks Russ,
So you're saying that I need to restore both databases (Private AND Public
stores) at the same time? I can't just restore one or the other?

You can restore just one or the other.

  4. Thanks Icel,
This is from my original post:

"If I run eseutils it I can repair it (/p) and defrag it (/d) and a dump of
the headers (/mh) shows the store is clean, an integrity check (/g) shows
    it's OK..."

Eseutil repairs it fine, and defrag on it works OK following the repair, but
    then isinteg fails.

  5. Thanks Russ,
I'm still not sure I understand your answer, just to confirm I have this
    right:

I should be able to restore from backup ONLY the exchange Public Folder and
Logs by setting the existing Public store to be overwritten.

I can then replay the existing logs into the public folder store and mount it.

    Is that correct?

  6. Thank you both for your help. Although, I managed to sort it out. For future
reference here are the errors I was recieving when attemtpting to restore the
    public folder:

Consult the backup report for more detail.

The backup report doesn't give any clues and suggests consulting the event
    logs for more information.

In the end to resolve it I had to dismount the store Public Folder store,
move out the Pub1.edb database files (.edb and .stm), then remount the store.
This prompted me to create a new database which I confirmed. I then set the
new database to be overwritten by a restore and dismounted it. It was only
after creating a new blank public folder store database that allowed me to
    restore from the backup.

All is good in the hood now.
