    Thanks again for the reply.

I believe I did install that one, as the service pack did not appear in
Windows Update. I suspect something is badly wrong with all the updates
it tries to install, as I see those repeated errors in the Event Viewer
upon each restart, like it thinks they arenĀ“t relevant, or it fails to
    install them correctly.

    I found this thread:
'Dell Inspiron 1420 Blue Screen when restart - Page 2 - Notebook Forums
    and Laptop Discussion'

and will try that suggestion and post back here with the results.

    Cheers.

My Vista started to update itself. After Vista downloaded Service Pack 1 it
asked me to confirm installation, so I started to install it. It took more
than 1 hour until Vista installed Service Pack on my laptop. Then I restarted
the system and it stopped working at all. Vista gives me the blue screen
saying that I might have a virus and asks me to insert Vista CD to repair the
system. My laptop doesn't even work right now and it doesn't run Vista.

If you restart the system, I believe you can press F12 or F2 to choos
the starting mode. Therein, you can choose "Last known goo
configuration" which is the configuration which was used the last tim
you successfully booted the system. In this way, you should be able t
go back to before you installed the service pack

If you do a repair with the Vista cd you might be able to go back t
the restore point from before installing the SP

    Good luck!

Btw, the last link appeared to work and I can re-start my comp now
although the service pack installation also failed - perhaps th
    hibernation thing kicked in
