First some background. I am using Windows 98 (not SE) and
have fully updated it using the Microsoft Windows Update
Website. I have upgraded Internet Explorer to version
6.0... I have reinstalled both Windows 98 and Internet
Explorer 6.0... I beleive my problem began as a result of
installing software to add a spell checker to internet
explorer. It may have not been compatable with the
    release I am using.

When restarting I get an error message that says there is
a program trying to update Internet Explorer with outdated
files. I have traced the problem to the startup file using
the System Confifuration Utility. I have unchecked an
entry on the Startup tab that says:

    Shell32 Iexplorer.exe

However, Every time I restart this entry is reactivated.

How do I keep this entry from reactivating? How do I
permently delete it from the Startup tab?

This is not a Windows Update question so please repost to a Win98
    group.

"iexplorer.exe" is a virus so check the name thoroughly.

Check the item in Msconfig (don't restart) then:

    Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
    Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message.
    (not in this newsgroup please)

Msinfo32 will show you where the item is starting from but you may not
be able to interpret that yourself.
