Thanx to all for your suggestions.

In order to get back to basics, can anyone enlighten me on
what the error code actually is indicating?

My thought is that I'm probably missing 1 update/fix that
would resolve the update issue. Of course the problem
is "which" update/fix to apply. I could download
everything from the catalog site but how long would that
take???? What "bugs" me the most is that M$ wrote the
software code to indicate an error (0x80072EFF), yet we
the consumer can't find out what the error code means!
I've searched all of Microsoft with "zero" documents
    returned...

So if there someone from M$ "listening", just point me in
a troubleshooting direction, and I'll be happy to post my
findings, good or bad (well maybe they won't want me to
    post the bad)...

    Hi Big Ed,

    In addition to Kari's post:

    Error 0x80072EFF = "ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_RESET"

The error is occurring while Windows Update attempts to scan the system for
    drivers.
Is this error occurring only on Windows 2000 Compaq machines?
As for the Windows 98 scan process URL it sounds like a possible caching
    issue. We're no longer using:
    https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/consumerdriver...
    it should be:
    https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/consumerdrivers/getmanifest.asp

Please clear any old Windows Update files for Windows 98 and Windows 2000
    Follow KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319585

Also if you could verify the following sites are fully trusted:
    Add the following Trusted Sites:
    http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

    See Below:
    machines?

I've only tested it on 3 machines (Compaq P933, clone
P450, clone P400). All have at least 256MB, globs of
    storage (IDE), different video(ATI, nVidia)/nics(DLink,
Intel Pro 100). No extras (unusual devices). Is there
anything I can download to test which drivers/sub-systems
    are giving me the problem?
    Yes they are.

    Thanx...

    Thanks for the update.

In order to troubleshoot the connection reset error we can perform the
    following:

    1) Get a Netmon trace
    2) Install and run Windows Update debug

I can send you the necessary steps to enable Windows Update debugging.

    Thanks,

Could you please send instructions for WU Debug?  I'd like to try to use it for my problem as well.  (see post 0x800A138F with 0x800C0008 error.)

I need a valid email address. You can create a temp email for this process.
Also did you have an opportunity to run Netmon?
