You should contact Dell's support if unanswered here. Part of the support you
are paying for is anything in Windows. Dell support can access your PC
    remotely to help you.

Already did that. was on the line for over 2 hours while the "help" did
things that i told him i had already done. Then put me on hold often and
eventually said he would call me back the next day after talking about it
with others. He of course didn't call me back and wasted 2 hours of my life.

So i ask again. Can somebody please help me with this?

You just need to decode it. <eg>

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
    F:\>set /a c =0x57
    87
    F:\>net helpmsg %c%

    The parameter is incorrect.
    </cmd_output>

    Isn't that helpful? ; }

As usual error codes are meaningless without their context.
Find where in the log that code in any of its representations is found.
Then look before that. Activate verbose logging if necessary.
Supplement the logging with ProcMon tracing if necessary.

    Good luck

Does anyone, anywhere, know how to fix this error?

I get it trying to run the Vista SP1 update.

I have tried lots of things, from running CCleaner, downloading updated
drivers for almost everything, disabling my firewall, anti-virus and
    spyware/trojan blocker.

I've even tried uploading updated Vista media codecs.

There is nothing, that I can see, remotely resembling a fix, and it would be
useful to know exactly how widespread this is.

So if you've got a Windows Live Messenger account, please post here. Simply
    login and reply.

    Some of them look familiar.

I forgot to mention that I've also tried the "delete the
    %windows%\softwaredistributio.etc.." directory delete fix.

Is there an easier way of entering hyperlinks than simply pasting them into
the message - such as text to identify link ??

    "TaurArian"

I have read through, and checked your links, and it seems none of them have
anything new to say about this problem. I'm sorry to say. I've read them all
before and there is no practical help in resolving the error.

Sorry my friend, but I'm really way ahead of of all those.

Perhaps you ought to know that I've been worrying at this issue, like a
rabid dog in a sheep pen, for the past week or two and have gotten no closer
    to resolving the issue.

  11. So tell us what files you found that the update changed which contain 57 or 87?

  13. This is just a summary log. I suspect you may get more details by trying to find
other diagnostics from the same event.

However, it sure looks like things are FUBAR.
E.g. if the 0x05B4 means this

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
    H:\>set /a c = 0x5B4
    1460
    H:\>net helpmsg %c%

This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
    </cmd_output>

I would expect to see at least some measurable gap in each timestamp.
Instead it appears to have retried this 12 times before crapping out.

    You told TaurArian that you
<quote> tried the "delete the %windows%\softwaredistributio.etc.." directory delete fix. </quote>

What exactly is implied by "tried"? And when?

Notice that instead of downloading AU is trying to reuse already downloaded bundles
for one update. If those are corrupt or complicated enough to run into bugs that could explain
your symptom and redownloading it could either clear up the corruption or possibly make
the downloaded package simpler (e.g. fewer bundles.)

Depending on your objective you might just try doing a manual install of this update
instead of trying to diagnose this symptom which I suspect is likely to be a problem with AU.

Otherwise to get more insight on what these messages really mean, more particularly
what AU is really doing during the download phase and before the install phase,
I would invoke verbose logging wherever it is available and supplement those diagnostics
    with a ProcMon trace.

    Good luck

    Robert,

    Thanks.

That particular response may not have been the one directly after deleting
the software distribution folder. What I am saying is that after deleting
it, I still get the same error no. 80070057.

My objective is simply to install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista - that is
    all.

I will delete the Software Distrtibution directory and try again. Then I'll
post the error report here again.

I have also tried a manual install after downloading the full 400mb odd
package - but I guess I can try again. This time combining both deleting the
    SD directory.

But I'm not very hopefull. Anyway, I'll post back here shortly.

Ok, before starting the following I: -

    Restarted the computer
    deleted the software distribution directory
    turned off ZoneAlarm Free
    turned off AVG Free
turned on Windows Firewall and adjusted for recommended settings

The following ended with Error 80070057

I will have to post in several parts

    Hi again Robert

Ok - so now I downloaded the full 434mb service pack from the MS Website.

I once again stopped my firewall and anti virus, and enabled the Windows
firewall and adjusted to recommended settings.

Then I ran the service pack Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe.

The update ran for about 5 or 6 minutes and disappeared without rebooting
Windows. However disk accessing continued for about a further 10 minutes
before slowing down to virtually no disk accessing. After a while I rebooted
    Windows.

You will not that the update says the user declined to run update after
rebooting. In fact I wasn't given the option.

There were no error messages - it simply stopped.

I am going to run this one again - but this time "As Administrator" (even
though I am using an administrator account).

However, here is the resulting log entries for this attempt:

This is as far as I can go. My next option - unless you, or anyone else,
can diagnose this and give me some sort of resolution - is to do a complete
reinstallation of Vista. And I can't even guarantee that would resolve this
issue, I would simply be doing it before installing any software.

Anyway, here is another printout from the update log. I ran this as an
administrator and left it for 3 hours before restarting my PC (I went to
Tesco to get some new specs).

Again, my firewall and AV unloaded & the windows firewall reinstated as
    before:-

  20. You still haven't done a sufficient diagnosis IMO.
By installing it manually you should be completely independent of the WU/AU
distribution machinery. So you should be looking for alternate diagnostics
(e.g. install log and verbose install log) from that. If you can't figure out the
names of such diagnostics using simpler tools such as File Search (e.g. search
for files changed on the day the update was run and then sort by timestamp),
then you could use ProcMon to find them.

    QED. ; )

BTW this was written before trying to do any further analysis on
your WU/AU log. If I see anything new or interesting in it I'll
comment further later. For now I strongly urge you (again) to try
to find *alternate* diagnostics for your install attempts.

    Good luck

    Robert
