I've been stuck trying to download critical updates
    821557 811493 815021 823980 & 817606 for several months
now. They download but do not install. In the
iuhist.xml file there is an error code of "-2147023293"
    at each update.

I have tried renaming the catroot2 folder, deleting the
contents of the \wutemp and programfiles\windowsupdate
folders, updating my xml parser, disabling zonealarm and
    norton antivirus, deleting my cookies/saved
pages/internet temp files, adding the windows update site
to my trusted sites list, and updating my cryptography
stuff. All other updates download and install normally,
even while these 5 do not. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Sarlacc,

Can you please post the Windows Update.log from c:\windows and dberr.txt
    located in c:\windows\system32\catroot2 folder.

    Thanks,

    Hi Sarlacc

I have the same problem - please let me know if you venture on a fix. I have
been getting headaches over this for a month now. If I find a fix I will let
    you know

    Thanks

If you need more than what sections I put up below, please
let me know. I didn't want to post the entire file if I
didn't have to. The iuhist.xml error is still the same.

I'm putting up the line I think you need from the
    windowsupdate.log ...follows:

    2003-10-06 20:34:22 00:34:22 Error IUENGINE
See iuhist.xml for details: Install finished (Error
    0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

And a section from the deberr.txt (keep in mind I recently
deleted my old catroot2 folder, so this log file only goes
    back to yesterday) follows:

    Sir:

I did indeed stumble over your earlier post during my
quest for a solution. I was quite excited when I found
it, but not when I learned you hadn't managed to resolve
the problem. I have a fairly recent install of xp home,
and I'd rather not bother to reinstall, but every time I
turn off zonealarm I get blaster or one of its variants.
It is getting extremely annoying. I'll let you know if it
    gets solved!

    Hi Sarlacc,

We need to determine you are indeed having the same problem as John. Try
installing one update at a time to see if this is an individual update from
the Microsoft TechNet security site. Do they install? If not I need the
    exact error message.

Sorry for the delay. Vacation and couldn't get to
    newsgroup.

Anyways, tried removing all the updates that I had
installed, using add/remove programs. then reinstalled
all using windowsupdate. same problem as before.

if I click install updates, even just one of the 5 (I've
tried all of them individually) the error message at the
    end is the same:

The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then
    click Install Now again.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB824146)
    821557: Security Update (Windows XP)
    811493: Security Update (Windows XP)
Security Update for Windows XP (815021)
    Q329441: Critical Update
    817606: Security Update (Windows XP)

The Q329441 is new as of today...after uninstalling all
the old updates. Don't know if that is relevant or not,
but it won't install, even if I do it individually.

Tried following link you gave. got back to windowsupdate
eventually. did install Microsoft Baseline Security
Analyzer, got several problems, the only major ones were
with updates- same ones as won't install.

    cheers-
