update fails, but logs as successful, but isn't

    my updates fail to install, but in the log they keep saying successful. but the system never recognizes any installed update, keeps trying, and keeps saying successful. i've disabled my norton antivirus to install, but that hasn't helped. any ideas? clipped reports below

    "It appears you have the correct setup files, but the installation failed. Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If that still does not work, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for additional help.

    Hi Sean,

    Let's try the following:

    Download the setup files from the following site to your desktop:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp





    Next:



    Boot in Safe Mode



    1. Click the Start menu, Choose Run, type msconfig in the open box, and then
    click Ok.
    2. Click the General tab, and then click the Advanced button.
    3. Check the option Enable Startup menu.
    4. Click Ok.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and then press the ENTER key.





    Install the update.



    Let us know the results.
