Today, we released an update for Windows Live Essentials 2011 in all 48 languages. This minor release includes numerous updates across all of the programs in the Essential package, including Windows Live Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Family Safety, Writer, and Mesh. In the coming weeks, customers on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 will receive a notification prompting them to upgrade to the new version. Since this release contains critical fixes for the Essentials package, in a few months, the update will become required for all eligible customers.

Current customers moving from Windows Live Essentials 2009 to 2011 will see a whole host of new features, including new social features in Windows Live Messenger, the ability to chat with Facebook friends, photo fuse in Photo Gallery, new themes in Movie Maker, and much more.

Did Microsoft undo (fix) their screwup regarding indentation of quoted
content, especially in newsgroup posts? Or is it still broke (after
they broke what was working before)?

    Hi, Noel.

Thanks! First I'd heard of this update.

I just now downloaded and installed the whole updated WLE 2011 package -
check the updated Build number in my Sig. ;<)

Haven't had time to check out anything yet - but I see there are no ">"
indicators on your message quoted below. :>(

By the way, in case anyone is wondering, the prior build of WLM 2011 works
fine in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I'll try this new one tonight or
    tomorrow.

As a reminder, Windows XP users are locked out of the later versions
(Wave 4). For them, 2009 (Wave 3) is the latest they can get.

OK...Reply to myself to say that, yes, the new Build 15.4.3555.0308 also
installs and runs in Win8 CP. Still haven't seen any changes, though. :>(

Disappointing. I use Thunderbird now for that very reason, but like the
way WL handled newsgroups better in layout and navigating through the
messages. Was hoping this might get fixed in the next big update, guess
I am going to be stuck with having to use Thunderbird now - looks like
    permanently at this point.

If expecting Mail upgrades (or any patch/fix for nttp compatibility) that
boat sank along time ago. For all practical purposes (while WLE applications
can run on Win8) the WLE suite of products is legacy software thus updates
unless show stoppers (can't install, won't run, security) imo will not be
    feature based.

    QFE1 only provided minor fixes
    - Messenger video call, status message/display pic sync
    - Photo Gallery geotagging overwriting GPS coordinates in image files
    - Language translation
    - balance under the hood for stability and performance across integrated WLE
    products and the Live Server

    QFE2
    - Mail update to accommodate a future IE8/9 cumulative update eliminated the
IE caused prepended '?' in messages and printing in IE8/9, sorting issue in
Sent items folder, photo email integration
    - Messenger voice/video quality, loss of sound after upgrading
    - Photo Gallery crashes when launched via AutoPlay and facial recognition
    - under the hood (similar to QFE1 under the hood reasons)

    QFE3
    - no public info available
    - initially an optional update, eventually in a few months a mandatory
update to retain functionality on Vista Sp2/Win7
    - as in the past --> no mix and match..upgrading one upgrades all installed
    applications.

Oh man! I used Thunderbird for many years and I can't believe I used
that piece of crap for so long. Have you noticed about 1 to 2% of the
    newsgroup messages are missing yet?

One observed change after installing build 3555: contacts have moved to another folder yet again. The DBStore folders are now within folders called 15.5, not 15.4 as before. There's a lot of boilerplate out there that will need updating (got that, ...winston?).

I haven't heard anything about it here, but WLM (Wave 5) is Metro based.

A preview of Windows Live for Windows 8
    http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_.../a-preview-of-windows-live-for-windows-8.aspx

I've seen the Mail app in Metro, but I never clicked in there yet. But
the video at the above ULR says it will get email from Hotmail, GMail,
or from your ISP. No mention of newsgroups though.

Thanks for the heads up Vanguard! And another FYI is that WLM (Wave 5)
will only work with Windows 8 or later. As it is now a Metro app.

Btw, anybody know where to download WLM 2007?

Okay I just tried WLM (Wave 5) and it only does Hotmail, Gmail, and
Exchange email as far as I can tell. I can't find anything to do with
    newsgroups either.

    Hi, Bill.
To clarify: The update Ildhund posted about is for Wave 4, not Wave 5. As
it says in my Sig, I'm running the latest build (15.4.3555.0308) in Win7 -
and also in Win8 CP - and have been since Noel posted the heads-up a couple
    of weeks ago.

The blog entry you posted today was dated September 21, 2011, and discusses
the Developer Build. Has there been an update to that yet?

Yes..the change is necessary. Look at the folder structure in Win8 for the
    Metro apps.
Will get around to it eventually. Travel and vacation on and off for the
    last 8 weeks.

    Just for clarity sake..
The Mail app in Win8CP is *not* WLM. There are similarities in some files
and folder structure to WLM, but it would be more appropriate to call the
Win8CP Mail app the Windows Phone 7 mail app.

The Win8CP mail app at this time only supports mail (it is not an all
purpose client)...i.e. like the phone it does mail but unlike Windows Phone
7 it does not do Pop3 or IMAP but it does do Hotmail (like DeltaSync in
WLM), Gmail (preconfigured), and Exchange Server accounts.
    - Note: Any pop3 capable email account can be aggregated in a Hotmail
account (via the Hotmail web UI) for configuration into Win8CP mail app.
Mail for the account in Win8CP will continue to be sent (on behalf of the
pop3 account) with recipients replying to the the pop3 account. Third party
Live IDs which now have a Hotmail Inbox will fail after first use if setup
in Win8CP Mail app....i.e. to aggregate a pop3 account in Hotmail one needs
a true Hotmail type email account (Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com or other
    country specific domain derivative - Hotmail.ca, live.de, msn.uk.co, etc.)

Windows Live is being deprecated....i.e. like OE, Windows Mail, Money,
Digital Image Suite and other MSFT products for all practical purposes
becomes 'legacy-ware'. Stability and compatibility updates may be continued
to be released (e.g. WLE QFE3 was released last month...under the hood
changes, no new features or fixes to the UI).

The article (Sept 2011) you referenced should be interpreted:
Windows Live = SkyDrive, Hotmail, Messenger
Windows 8CP apps - Mail, People, Messenger, SkyDrive, Calendar, Contacts =
Windows Live web UI cloud services.

Win8CP does *not* include a news client (unlikely to in the future). For
news install WLM 11 or a 3rd party news client.

Finally, there is no such thing as WLM 2007. (the versions were 2008, 2009,
    2011) <g>

Thanks Winston! I guess Wikipedia's info is a bit misleading:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_Mail

As they don't call it WLM 2008, but rather version 12 (Wave 2) and was
released in 2007. So that is were I got the 2007 from. This is the
version that my EeePC came with. I use WLM 2009 on my Windows 7/8
    machines.

Wikipedia is also misleading about Wave 5 too. As it seems to suggest
that it is the Windows 8 Metro mail app.

Anyway, does anybody know where I can find a download of WLM 2008? My
EeePC restore discs have a Ghost v11 image of it, but no install so I
can't use it on my other computers.

Sorry i do not understand - what is the concept for the future now?
Only very recently, MS began PUSHING (and animating users) to accept and use
    Windows Live Products,
und OE, WinMail and so on was omtted for the favor of Windows Live Mail,
which is all in all part of the Windows Live suite.

The nice thing about WLM is that it combines all - news, all types of email
accounts (including pop3 and imap) and the calendar as well as the DeltaSync
    structure.

In desktop versios of windows, will this concept be continued or does MS
want to throw everything away again?

    I am confused ...

    greetings
