Update KB920872 + Realtek High Definition Audio

  1. I originally added the following message to another thread but it should
really be in a thread of its own:

I had a problem with this update. After it was installed, the sound
on my PC was very badly distorted -- unacceptable for speech, never mind
music. I suspect the update conflicts with my sound card and/or its driver.
The details of my sound device (given in System Information) are as follows:

    Name Realtek High Definition Audio
    Manufacturer Realtek
    Status OK
    PNP Device ID
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0880&SUBSYS_08800000&REV_0905\4&40DCA3D&0&001
    Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\rtkhdaud.sys (5.10.00.5172
    built by: WinDDK, 3.78 MB (3,966,976 bytes), 02/02/2005 11:23)

The problem may not occur with other devices but I'd recommend caution
installing the update. Create a restore point in System Restore, then install
this update on its own, not as one of several updates. If it causes a
problem, use System Restore to get rid of it again. If you're in doubt about
your ability to remove it this way, my advice (for which I accept no
liability whatever) is to check with your sound device manufacturer and/or
with Microsoft, first. Don't just ask about known problems; ask about known
    successes.

problem & a different sound device but the same update).

Note to Microsoft: As the medics say, "First, do no harm!"
