Update W95 to W98 Errors

    I have tried to update W95 to W98 and get an error. The loading stops at the error leaving a blank screen with no icons or menus. The mouse works. The error is "Explorer: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". Details are "Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in Module Explorer.exe at 015f:00401f31". I have tried the update several times but get the same error. What can be done to correct the error?????
