Using WIN XP Home Edition. Current updates - at least I
thought so. An error occurred while downloading a Win
update today (NVIDEA) - went to 1% then hung. Couldn't
get it to restart, so I restarted the pc. When
attempting to access the windowsupdate page, I received
the "You must be running a Microsoft Operating System in
order to use Windows Update." page. I turned off my
Symantec Firewall, followed the instructions at
    http://v4.windows.update.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ and
still my problem wasn't resolved. I uninstalled IE 6.0
and tried again, no success. I turned the automatic
update back on and it appeared to download SP1 and then
install. When my machine rebooted, I lost my address
toolbar and can't get it back - displays only the
word "address" - and still I can't access the windows
update site. Any answer better than "format the hard
    drive" is greatly appreciated.
