I am running 4-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. After repeated tries updates KB981715 and KB982312 will not install. I attempted manual installation of both. Each gave the error message "The expected version of the product was not found in the system." I did a reinstall of Office 2007 which appeared to be successful, but I still got the same error messages. I suspect that whatever is causing these problems is related to an Error 1606 when I try to install Adobe Acrobat Professional v9.

Go back to where you purchased the system and ask them for the other 60
bits that are apparently missing from your 64 bit system.

The 1606 installation error can stem from a few different issues. The
lack of the local or network installation source are 2 such issues.
You'll need to either enable a Windows Installer log, see if the Fixit
in the following KB article resolves it or, if this is a *Security
update*, contact Microsoft for *no-charge support* for getting the
    *Security update* installed.

You receive an "Error 1606" error message when you try to install or
    remove a Microsoft program

As there was never a 4-bit version of Windows I hoped that readers would correctly assume I goofed and inadvertently omitted the initial 6 in "64-bit." The computer is a stand alone desktop, i.e. not part of a network. I have tried the Fix it solution twice without success. I even went into the routine outlined for fixing it myself by making modifications to the Registry using regedit. For the Microsoft updates which won't work I get the "expected version of the product not found" error message. I get the Error 1606 message when I try to fix Adobe Acrobat Professional v9. Acrobat is on my machine, but does not appear in the list of items available to uninstall in Control Panel. As near as I can tell when it tries to update it has instructions which interact with Word and the way Word deals with pdf files. So my bet is that whatever is stopping the updates to Microsoft Office from working is probably also responsible for the Adobe Error 1606. I guess I have to take a deep breath an call Microsoft and see if they will handle this as part of "no-charge support."
