Upgrade 2003 evaluation to full Server 2003 edition

Discussion in 'Server Setup' started by Nikhil Bendre, Jul 15, 2004.

  1. Hi,

I have installed one Windows Server 2003 Eval copy and tested it for IIS 6.0
benefits on our network. This was a test enviroment which was successful.
This eval edition system is fully patched with all the latest updates from
    windowsupdate site.

I would like to now upgrade this edition to retail edition without losing
any settings and config done to this test system. My only query is since
installing the retail edition without any patches cause any system errors
which might affect the system and forcing me to completely format and
restart again. I know i would have to again install all the patches after
upgrade is done. I'm only concerned between the time system is active after
    upgrade and patches are re-applied.

    With Regards,

You'll essentially be doing an "in-place upgrade" - installing Windows
Server 2003 over itself. This will put the system back in an unpatched
state, but the system should continue to function. Just re-apply the
patches once the installation is complete, and you should be all set.

Of course, if you're really worried about the settings, you'll want to back
    the system up first...
