Users Passwords

Discussion in 'Server Security' started by Darren's Notebook, Sep 16, 2004.

  1. Hi all! Just restored a DC running Win NT4.0 Server not to long ago, and
have only one complaint.. My users cannot change their passwords from
their local machines (mixed operating systems win98, win2k). What the heck
    did I miss/do wrong??

  2. I have not used NT4.0 in quite a while but make sure that your netbios name
resolution is up to snuff in that wins is configured properly with all clients using
the proper wins address for the wins server. Also make sure the domain controller is
a wins client. You also may want to check your wins database to see if wins records
are being recorded correctly, especially the PDC domain controller and that there are
not any static records with wrong addresses or other wrong info. All the computers
should be able to easily ping the PDC domain controller by name. Check the Event
Viewer on the PDC for any errors that may indicate a problem. Passwords can only be
changed on the PDC in a NT4.0 domain. --- Steve
