Virtual PC 2007 and 2004 no longer run

I had a working VPC 2004 on WinXP SP2. I downloaded and installed VPC 2007
and all worked well with my previously created virtual machines on more than
    one occasion.

Today, however, when I tried to start VPC 2007, all I got was the splash
screen and a task bar button. Clicking the task bar button made the button
vanish and nothing else happened. The Task Manager showed VPC was running as
a process but the Applications list did not show it.

I tried to uninstall in order to reinstall. I had to reboot in order to
uninstall as I kept getting a message that the program was running. Clicking
on Yes to continue just cycled back to the same message.

A reinstall of VPC 2007 did not help, so I tried to use a Windows Restore
point. None would restore anything. So I uninstalled again, rebooted, and
installed my old version VPC 2004 from CD. It has the same problem - splash
screen and task bar button but nothing else.

I had not used the VPC for a few days and have not installed software since
I did except for Quicken's Online Backup, which I installed today. It won't
work either so I uninstalled it before uninstalling VPC 2007.

Any suggestions would be welcome! Something is deeply wrong!!

    This is a FAQ item.
Basically your options.xml file has been corrupted so that VPC2007
will place its console window well outside your screen (about 1000 km
    to the right).
Close down VPC2007 and then go here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\%your username%\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Virtual PC

then open the options.xml file in your favourite editor (notepad?) and
    go to the node <preferences><window><console>
    Here you will find:
    <left_position type="integer">%an impossible value%</left_position>
    <top_position type="integer">%an impossible value%</top_position>

Just replace the impossible values with 0, save the file and start
The console will now appear in the upper left corner of your screen.

Well color me pink! Such a strange event to qualify for the FAQ that I did
not see anywhere and which did not show up when I tried to search.

You were exactly right as to the issue and its solution. Thanks!!
