I have read a lot of put downs on Vista. It is a different animal that
few bother to learn to understand. It has hardware likes and dislikes
and really has software likes and dislikes. It walks all over XP on my
AMD Athlon 64 [email protected] 6000+ with 4Gb of DDR2 800 memory and a NVIDA GE
Force 8600 GTS graphics card. I use a SATA boot disk as it is faster
    than an IDE ATA 133.

One of the groups tht complains the most about Vista is lazy
programmers that do not want to put forth the effort to upgrade their
product. I once worked for a company that resisted moving from DOS to
Windows. It is out of business now.

I found it too slow on a high spec ($3200) laptop. That only had 2 GB of
    RAM.
I program a bit and one program I do develop (ChessDB)

    http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/

    works OK on Vista.

But I still think Vista is a very poor operating system. I very rarely
use it now. I'm writing this on my laptop, which came pre-installed with
Vista Business, but if you look at the header, you will find i am not
    using Vista now.

I could find nothing that improved on productivity over XP. In contrast,
operating systems such as Solaris and Linux do give increased
    productivity over XP.

There is no doubt Windows 98 was better than 95. Apart from the issue
with games and drivers, few could arge NT was more stable than 95 or 98.
XP is better than NT - few could argue with that. But of all the
relaeases from M$, I doubt that has ever been one which generates such a
    high percentage of complaints.

None of the replies include any info as to hardware used.

Actually there have been a couple of MS releases that have generated as many
complaints as Vista. The first was ME and they were probably deserved.

But the one that generated the most complaints was XP when it was released.
Those supposedly in the know said it was buggy, it was a resource hog, it
had hardware compatibility problems, software wouldn't run on it. Sound
familiar? Trust me on this. I had an interesting "discussion" with Kyle from
the Hard OCP website because he was very vocal about how lousy XP was and
how everyone needed to stay on Server 2000.

And then people built systems that could handle it, software developers
wrote software that worked and now the anti-MS crowd clings to XP and sings
its praises. How short everyones memory seems to be.

I've been running Vista Home Premium for 8 months on a Core 2 Duo machine
with 4 gigs of ram and an NVidia 8800 GTS card with no problems. It runs all
of my software fine and plays every game I've thrown at it so far. I've
actually had more problems with my company issued laptop that's running XP
    Pro.
