Vista does not respond to server

    At work I got a new computer with Window Vista, this was connected to the
    server but it simple does not respond whenever I try to get any data or move
    a file from the server to the vista computer. Dell sent a new computer,
    furthermore many IT personnel from the place that I work had check the
    computer and all got to the answer that is a Vista problem.
    I was given a patch KB Article Number(s): 931770, which does not work, as it
    says that the file is corrupted.

    Does anyone now how to solve this problem. Does anyone know how I can return
    Window Vista to microsoft and get XP back.

    Vista has to be Business or Ultimate to join a Domain.

    You haven't given us any hard information about your computer or the server
    so I can't address any of those issues.

    However, I gather that your question really is how you can get XP. Since
    this is a Dell computer, contact Dell and have them replace this new
    computer with one running XP. Microsoft isn't involved in this transaction
    in any way.

    The computer is a Intel Celeron, 32-bit operating system and 2037 Ram.
    It has Windows Vista Home Basic.
    The main issue is that in the server we have a program that we record calls
    that we receive or make to clients. These are then save into an SQL query in
    the server (which I think is part of the program that record the information
    from clients).
    When I try to install the program from the server to the computer, it just
    Furthermore when I try getting documents or data that we have in the server,
    it takes 10-15 minutes at least to appear.
    We connected a laptop with Windows XP and data was taken from the server in
    Dell gave me a patch "KB931770", however when I try running this in the
    computer, it says error code 40. Dell sent a new computer and the same error
    appears (error code 40).

    Please let me know if you need further information.

    You left out what operating system the server is running and whether you are
    using a domain, but here are a few suggestions:

    1. Vista Home Basic cannot join a domain. It cannot cache passwords. If you
    have a domain, it would be smarter to upgrade to Vista Business or
    Ultimate. However, see the caveat in #2.

    2. The program you use to record calls may not be compatible with Vista.
    Although this should have been explored *before* you bought a computer
    running Vista, you should now contact the program's tech support. They may
    have a workaround or a patch or at least know whether their program
    supports Vista. They will also know if their program requires a
    domain-joined computer.

    3. If the necessary call program doesn't support Vista, then you should
    return the computer to Dell for one running XP. Do this now while Dell can
    still legally sell computers with XP.
