I apologize for being so dense Andre, but diskpart informed me of
insufficient room on the drive for what I am asking. Apparently it needs to
know I do not want to make the new partition maximum size and don't have a
clue how to tell it. Should I go to a utility after all. . .something not so
    "native". <g>

  5. When you say go to a utility or referring to a dedicated tool for
partitioning? Sure, I use Partition Magic and I always get great results.

LOL! Back to square one. . .I install the Vista-to-be drive as slave to my
XP PRO system and partitioned and formatted it prior to Vista install. I
installed Vista x86 on the first partition and will go dual boot next with
x64 on partition 2. So far so good. . .ain't this fun?
