Vista pointing devices (HID-compliant mouse)

The OS is Windows Vista Ultimate.

When my system starts up it enables an HID-compliant mouse (two
drivers). When I plug in a USB mouse it enables a second HID-compliant
mouse. Looking in device manager, two are listed. If I start the
system with a mouse in a USB port it automatically enables two devices
(HID-compliant mice). Even if I right choose uninstall, or disable and
one of the mice is removed it comes back on restart.

When I click or double click the mouse the actions occur twice. For
    example, two browser windows open.

How do I remove one of the mice permanently, and please don't tell me
    to use a mouse trap.

Thank you, and have a great day.

  2. are you saying that with only one mouse plugged in, you are seeing 2 mice in
device manager? If you view by connection, are they connected to the same
hub? or is one mouse a child of the other?

Viewing by connection was enlightening. The first mouse was connected
to an IR TxRx. I disabled it. The second mouse is listed as an HID
connected to a (wired) USB hub. Problem seems to be solved. If not,
the problem may be in the mouse, where upon I can try another mouse.
    Thank you.
