Last night, I tried to install a Beta of SP1 for Vista. To put it mildly, it
didn't go so well. Coincidentally, two viewers have written in to ask me how
    I feel about Vista.
    Okay then. Here we go.

So I install the service pack. The machine reboots a couple of times during
the install. and suddenly I'm at a black screen, with nothing other than my
mouse cursor on it. O-kayyyy. Reboot a couple of times. Nothing. Reboot into
safe mode. Oh! That worked. Tried rebooting normally. black screen of
nothing. Repeat this process several times.

Fine, whatever. Get out the Vista disc and go into the recovery console.
Great! I can roll back to yesterday, before I began this mess. So, I tell
the machine to do so! Uhm. what do you mean there is no space left on my HD
    to perform this operation?

Boot into XP, which was already residing on this machine. Delete some
useless files to free up space. Go back into recovery console. Holy hell you're
kidding me!!!! Going into XP deleted all the restore points in Vista!

I am now left with a crippled and useless Vista. Did I reinstall it?
Absolutely not. I am running Windows XP again now. Yes, I miss the look of
Vista, and maybe the way the desktop is handled. But. XP is running. It's
    faster. It WORKS!!

Do I recommend Windows Vista? Not a snowball's chance in.....I'm waiting on
Apple to release Mac OS X Leopard. As far as I'm concerned at this point,
Microsoft is taking a huge hit. The future of Windows, in my opinion, is
inside a Virtual Machine or BootCamp on a Mac.

Let me hear from you! You know how to find me! Email me, send me an eyejot,
leave me a comment. Let me know if you are having trouble with Vista. And if
so. what specific problems? I'm interested in finding out if many of us are
having the same problems. Who knows? Maybe. just MAYBE. someone will listen.

  3. Obviously, you are not a qualified Vista SP1 beta tester as there
is a special SP1 beta testing newsgroup for such discussions.
Those who install beta software do so at their own risk, especially
if such beta software was obtained from unauthorized or leaked sources
where the code cannot be ascertained as genuine and untainted.

To put it mildly, do not install any Microsoft SP1 beta software if you
are not an authorized beta tester (through Microsoft Connect).

  4. So you install the very first release of a beta Service Pack on your
production machine and are now whining about loss of data or a none bootable
    OS.
If you are in the technical beta program then you already know all about the
posted issues with this initial release and the appropriate workarounds etc
and also are acutely aware of the fact that installation on your day to day
production machine should only be attempted if you have a means to perform a
full bare metal restore to prior to applying the BETA service pack and that
you also take all necessary precautions to protect yourself against any
potential functional problems with the OS or loss of data how so ever
    caused.
So we'll happily talk to about your issues with the beta of SP1 in the
technical beta support newsgroups which you have access to as a member of
the currently closed technical beta program for Windows Vista SP1.
If you have acquired this by an unauthorized and unsupported route then you
    have only yourself to blame.
So we will see you in the SP1 support newsgroups - or probably not.

  7. Tiberius, the other responders didn't pick up the fact, this rant may not be
from you unless you happen to be Chris Pirillo.

Nonetheless, aside from the fact this is a first beta build and as stated,
the testers do have access to information regarding known issues and
workarounds, did you notice the fact he seems incredulous at the fact XP was
erasing restore points in Vista? He either isn't a Vista user, in which
case, he probably shouldn't be testing SP1 or he's woefully lacking in
knowledge of a problem that is fairly well known to those dual booting Vista
and XP. I'm not saying everyone knows but they certainly find out if they
    use the System Restore feature.

Second, what kind of a beta tester doesn't create a full system backup or
better yet an image of their setup prior to installing a beta? He's moaning
about his unusable system, something easily overcome by just using a common
    practice among beta testers.

Why should anyone place any stock in a rant from someone who either didn't
take the basic precaution taken by most testers or is so lacking in
knowledge of common testing practices not to mention current issues with
Vista, it makes his rant totally without merit. After all, this isn't a
public beta as yet, the testers are selected and he doesn't appear to have
knowledge of current Vista issues and doesn't take the most basic of
precautions to protect his system from a major calamity that might result
from installing a beta build, especially an early beta build.. Come on,
Tiberius, you can do better than that.

He is a left over from tech tv days. He was a gopher for that show. He's
a know nothing newbie computer user who has a blog. He apparently
couldn't find his own ass using both hands even with the lights turned on.

should have the brains to at least change the news reader you're
    using.

  10. Talk about oxymorons. If anybody that was a past beta tester for Vista
was qualified, then Vista wouldn't be as fuc*ed up as is and wouldn't
need the upcoming SP1. Leave it to Frisch to stick his foot in his
    mouth.

    ROTFLAMO!
Yea right, you always want to go to a Microsoft site to be sure to get
the official genuine sure to be tainted with bugs version.
I bet you get a woody when you say that.

When oh when will Microsoft wise up and kill their moronic MVP program
like they were set to do years ago so clueless Bozos don't shoot off
their mouths in newsgroups like this and make Microsoft look even
dumber then they are already perceived for picking these clowns to
    "help".

Michael, thank god at least ONE person understood that this is not me but
    Chis Pirillo..

Yes he could do some things in a more intelligent way...

For example I would not even be using vista on a production machine,
    since it is beta quality.
Well I did try it once.. and everything was so slow I couldnt "produce"
    anything on the production machine.
And certainly I would not be installing a beta service pack on a beta
    quality OS...!

    lol

Why did I post this? Well out of interest, since some people may be thinking
    of installing SP1 beta,
this will make up their minds fast on how to go about it, IF they go about
    it.

  18. Let me guess, you honestly don't think I kicked you shity ass every
time I bothered to respond to your drivel right?

Well pal, if that's you illusion, who am I to deprive you of it since
that's probably all you got in the miserable existence you call your
    life.

  19. You claim a lot of things. That's actually why I have no trouble at
all slapping you clowns from one end of this newsgroup to the other
without even trying. You're simply too dumb to present any meaningful
counterpoints to anything, regardless of topic. You're just noise and
    cannon fodder for me. Thanks!
