Vista Windows Update error Code: 80070490 Windows Update encountered an unknown error

    Hi

    I get the following error when trying to run windows update

    Windows Update with Windows Ultimate Extras
    Windows could not search for new updates
    Erros Found:
    Code: 80070490 Windows Update encountered an unknown error

    Have done the following so far:
    Stopped windows update and bit transfer service deleted
    c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
    restarted above.
    the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution is recreated etc..

    Still get the above error when using Windows update services.

    Hope to hear from you all soon

    0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND
    Corrupted System File; Need to perform an in-place upgrade or reinstall of
    the OS.

    Ignore the title you could try SFC : Some Windows Vista functions may not
    work, or Windows Vista may stop responding

    Tells you about SFC (no guarantees) you still may have t reinstall the OS.
