Have been struggling for the past 2 weeks to try and get the vpn working on
sbs 2003 standard edition recently installed.

Problem is when i try to connect to the server over a vpn link the
connection goes through without any problems and the connection dialog box
brings up a message "verifying username and password" and just stays on that
box and then times out with an error 721. Have checked and made sure that my
user account is a member of the mobile users and remote users groups and all
is good at the server end unless i am missing something clearly i must be so
any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

  3. Hi Sid

Error 721 is always GRE 47 protocol problem on TCP port 1723. Your router is
not passing that. Check with your router vendor to see if a firmware update
    is required.

  4. Hi Sid,

The 721 error generally is a failure to pass GRE (Protocol 47), and is a not
uncommon issue with SOHO routers (I presume you have one?) See if your
router has a setting for PPTP passthrough, or VPN passthrough. If so,
enable this and the error may go away. You'll likely also have to forward
port 1723 traffic if you haven't already - but I think you have or you
wouldn't have got far enough to get the 721 error.

If the error persists, and/or you can't find such a setting, then post the
make and model of your router - in some cases a firmware upgrade is
required, in other cases some seemingly odd port forwarding (Port 47).
