Was: A fix for MCE network video thumbnail slowness

Discussion in 'Windows Media Center' started by Alex Feinman [MVP], Jul 5, 2003.

  1. Luis et al,

I did some experiments regarding the issue where MCE shell overwrites the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
    Folders\CommonPictures value

The ovewrite happens when the underlying library (ehuihlp.dll) calls
SHGetFolderPath API function to retrieve the path for CSIDL_COMMON_PICTURES
= 0x36. This is done by shell and is a subject of separate conversation.

    As a solution try setting
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\CommonPictures (does not exist by default) to the network
    share path

  2. Good call Alex! On my system, this method does allow me to successfully
point Media Center to a remote Shared Pictures directory.

Note to anyone else who tries this: Do exactly as Alex says and make a
"CommonPictures" string (no space in the name), even though all the entries
around it have a space in them like "Common Blah".
