Web shortcut icons default to IE Explorer icons after a while...

    What causes my web shortcut icons on the desktop to lose their appearance and
    default to the standard IE explorer icons (for example Bank of America icon
    provided by the website ends up looking like the blue "E" for internet
    explorer)?
    Can anything be done to keep this from happening?
