For better or worse, I have my own "safe mode" which uis quicker and
more efficient than trying to track down BSOD's or , in some cases,
    remove stubborn viruse.
I use Acronis (There are many others on the market - some free)
When I first installed my "vanilla" Vista, I made an image. I made a
subsequent image after installing all my major software and configuring
    it.
I had also made sure that the installaion had temp files removed and
    was defragged. etc.
I make subsequent backup images periodically, but these I over write
with each (about fortnightly) image I make.
Whenever I have the slightest hint of a problem, say a slow down or any
installation, removed, which I feel may have been a dirty install, I
boot up with the Acronis bootable CD and restore the appropriate image.
If you are already wondering - is it worth the time - It takes about 15
minutes to make a new image and about the same time to restore. I then
have the satisfaction of knowing the OS is clean again.
