Where did these boxes on my files come from?

recently my computer crashed, and the next time i booted up, every file,
folder, icon and shortcut now has a small tick box (check box) in the upper
left corner. it doesn't make a lot of difference, however it is annoying and
i dont know how to change it.

also, when i click on the start menu, the are that usually shows all my
recently used programmes is now a white blank box. whats happened? how do i
fix this?

 

I have the same problem with Vista home premiun and I have,nt found out
anything and I,ve tried it all I get the blank white icons instead of the red
Y like yahoo has for an icon and the check box, well I had them then they
disappeared so I don,t no how I need help also!

You may have turned on the "Use check boxes to select items" option b
mistake. This tutorial will show you how to turn it off so your icon
will not have that box anymore

ive already tried that option, but it doesnt make a difference!
and the programme list is still blank!

Try this tutorial to see if it can fix the Recent Program list in the
Start menu for you.
