Updates notification tells me that KB918899 (Cumulative Security update for
Windows Explorer for Windows XP) is available to download.

Clicking on the link in update notifications takes me to this webpage:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

Guess what, no sign of the above update, or ANY of the August
updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It ONLY LISTS the July updates.

    So I try this link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-aug.mspx

This web page lists the update, but guess what happens when you click on the
    link....

    It goes STRAIGHT TO http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
    again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on Microsoft you've been providing these updates long enough now to not
be making STUPID mistakes like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally did manager to get the update but ONLY with the help of a third
party email newsletter that provided the correct link to the download....

For anyone else trying to find this update try here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-042.mspx

That when you choose NOT to use Windows Update, and instead MANUALLY
download updates to install later, the links to the location of the updates
    should work.
They were NOT working Yesterday. BTW several other news forums had posts
from others having the same problem getting this update from the links
provided by the update notification tool and the websites.

My point is that someone at Microsft did NOT test the links to this update
properly and that you should read my OP again as I did NOT mention using WU
    at all....

    I guess humans make mistakes;)

Just go to WU download and install: problem solved.

    Naaaa....
It stuffs up too often to be relied on.
Just look at 90% of the posts in this group for proof of that.

I only use it ocassionally to check for missing updates. (alongside my main
update tools MBSA and Belarc Advisor)

I prefer to use the manual download, save to HD and burn to CD install
    option.

Thats much more reliable than WU for installing, testing and updating IMO.

    Hi there,

Nothing is flawless in this world unfortunately:)

If it is the buring to cd you are worried about: just use windows update and
copy the updates from the msdownld.tmp folder they remain there untill
    install is being excecuted.

That's ok if you can get onto the WU site - it keeps getting clogged.
You may have been lucky to get there early - with the problems others are
have not being able to find links to the KBs and auto update stalling when
trying to download all together etc.
Black Tuesday is getting worse by the month.
I am surprised at your response in this thread. You are most helpful as a
    rule.

No it isn't. Thats just so I have an 'offline' backup of the updates.
    Didn't you read my OP?

The problem I (and everyone else wanting to manually download the update)
had was that XP was telling me there was an update available, but the links
to the update were NOT going to that update.
It (the links to the update) were fixed 24 hours *AFTER* the update was
    released.
