Why does IE 7 always open TIFF files using Office Picture Viewer?

I posted a question earlier today about viewing multipage TIFF files using IE
    7. I think I'm isolating the problem. The program seems to be opening the
files using Office Picture Viewer. The "Page" button asks me if I want to
edit the image using Picture Viewer. I want to open the files using Office
Document Imaging which is a multipage TIFF viewer. I've gone into Control
Panel in XP and specified that I want to open TIFF files using Office
Document Imaging, but IE 7 seems to be ignoring my choice.

Right-click on a TIFF file already saved to your HDD > Open with > Select
desired application and check the "Always open with..." box.

Thanks. I can get at the files I need that way, but IE 7 still insists on
opening the files using Picture Viewer. I periodically get files from a
government agency on CD designed to be read using IE. I can get at the files
using Windows Explorer and read them that way.

I'm suggesting that you need to re-associate TIFF files with Office Document
Imagining, Steve. Try the instructions I posted.

Hi Steve - In the past I've recommended the Alterna TIFF plug-in which works
very nicely (except maybe for some special multi-page stuff occasionally in
some of the older releases) in IE6, free, here: http://www.alternatiff.com/
I don't know about IE7, but you might want to give it a try.

I followed the instrunctions you posted exactly. I even copied a file from
my CD to the hard drive, though I couldn't see why it would make a difference
if it was stored on the CD or HD. I think it's simply a bug in IE 7. No
shame in that. I have a workaround using Windows Explorer, so it's not a
major issue for me, but I think Microsoft should look into it.
