I notice tape cartridges are sometimes more expensive than an IDE hard
drive. Why not use IDE drive as backup media? Are tapes a lot more reliable
    than hard drives?

  2. Removable HD would be better than tape.

If you can't fire vault the HD, then backup to HD and then backup the backup to tape
    for off site.
